Over-the-counter magnifiers vs unique reading glasses: Which are better for you?

Just because you notice your eyes are tired after a day of staring at the computer screen, or you find you are holding printed materials farther away from your face, it doesn’t mean you have to abandon looking your best.

Schedule an eye exam and select a pair that will fit your eyes, your face and your personality. The Optical Shop of Westport also has ready made reading glasses at our location that are excellent quality!

What do you need?

If you only occasionally need a little extra magnification at home to read a recipe card or the fine print on a bill, over-the-counter readers might be fine for you. Buy several, in fact. They cost only a few dollars -- the equivalent of a magnifying glass set in an eyeglass frame -- and most people misplace them occasionally. It’s easier to have one in every room.

The age-related condition that affects all of us at around age 40 is called presbyopia. It signifies a weakening of the muscles that focus the lens in your eye, as well as a growing inflexibility in the lens itself. The condition means the lens is less able to provide sharp focus. Non-prescription magnifiers will address presbyopia but not other eye conditions, such as near-sightedness or astigmatism.

There are many benefits of reading glasses created specifically for you.

For your eyes only

A visit to the optometrist or ophthalmologist will result in a unique prescription. The correction for your left eye is likely to be different than the one for your right, for example. A prescription will also allow each lens to be focused on the optical center for each eye, which differs slightly for everyone. Without this, you may find yourself adjusting your head to find the clearest view. Only a prescription can correct for astigmatism, nearsightedness or other attributes that cause fuzzy sight.

Glasses from your optician will have lenses of the highest quality, without waves or even bubbles sometimes found in drug store readers.

Finally, at a store that specializes in designing and fitting frames just for you, a selection tailored to your taste will await you.

Visit our store to see a selection of designer frames, or to discuss your preferences in custom, one-of-a-kind frames. We sell Eyebobs readers and work with all local optometrists and ophthalmologists.
